When RBG fretted over the first dry opinion the chief justice assigned her, O'Connor gave her a pep talk. As RBG read that opinion on the bench, O'Connor, who had dissented in the case, passed her a note. "This is your first opinion for the Court, " she had written. "It is a fine one, I look forward to many more." Remembering the comfort that note gave her on such a nerve wracking day, RBG did the same for the next two women to join the court, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. . Irin Carmon
About This Quote

Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s most famous case is called "United States v. Virginia" and was decided in 1971. She wrote the majority opinion, arguing that the state of Virginia could not require bifurcation of cases in order to meet its goal of equality under the law. The case went to the Supreme Court, where she faced criticism from Justice William O. Douglas who believed that her decision was "too lenient." Douglas wrote that he agreed with the outcome of the case but believed that his colleague should have written an opinion more "pro-law" than "perfect justice." His criticism of her became known as "The Dissenting Opinion."
